Four habits that hold side work together

Longer note · updated October 2026

Most side work doesn't stop because the work dries up. It stops because the edges fray: money gets confusing, a tax bill arrives, or tiredness wins. Four small habits prevent most of that.

1. A weekly record

Same day, same time, ten minutes. Write down what came in, what went out and how many hours you worked. A notebook or a simple spreadsheet is enough.

2. A tax share from every payment

Move part of each payment to a separate account the day it arrives. Check your tax authority's guidance or ask an accountant how much is sensible for you.

3. A monthly review

Once a month, divide what you kept by the hours you spent. Look at which tasks were worth it and which weren't, and adjust.

4. One night off

Pick one evening a week with no side work at all. It sounds like lost time; in practice it's what keeps the other evenings possible.
